Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia
is a chronic disorder that causes muscle pain, abnormal sleep
patters, and fatigue. Those suffering from Fibromyalgia have
"tender points" on the body that correlate with specific
places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms and legs.
Most of
the research on Fibromyalgia has indicated that it is a disorder
of the central nervous system in which the central processing
of neurological and endocrine or glandular information is abnormal.
The increased pain experienced by Fibromyalgia sufferers seems
to be caused by the abnormal sensory processing in the central
nervous system. In other words, those with Fibromyalgia experience
intense pain from stimuli which normally would not produce such
symptoms.
The majority
of scientific studies now indicate a number of physiological
abnormalities in those with Fibromyalgia. These include
- the increased
levels of substance P in the spinal cord which causes patients
to experience more intense pain,
- low levels
of blood flow to the thalamus region of the brain,
- glandular
hypofunction of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis,
- and finally
low levels of serotonin.
