NUTRITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Heavy minerals such as lead and mercury can interfere
with the enzyme processes by displacing the essential mineral's
nucleus or by simply precipitating the enzyme altogether. Due
to changes in biochemistry from heavy metal toxins, it is important
to have an extra supply of essential minerals.
Vitamin C is essential for collagen, the cement
and elastin for the connective tissue of the body. It hydroxylates
proline and lysine, making it possible to crosslink protein chains
and form the basis for connective tissue strength. It detoxifies
toxins and is effective against small viruses, bacteria of all
kinds, certain fungal diseases, drug withdrawal and heavy metal
poisonings. As early as 1941, Dr. Marchmont-Robinson of Chicago
found that ascorbic acid relieved the symptoms of toxic lead
in workers who were exposed to lead dust. Dr. Harry Holmes found
that Vitamin C gave relief to people absorbing toxic minerals.
Vitamin C complexed lead and aided in the removal from the body.
Sulfur containing amino acids, Cysteine and
Methionine, have had success in helping the body get rid of its
heavy metal burden. P. J. Kostyniak found that substances containing
sulfhydryl, such as Cysteine, can remove toxic mercury from the
blood quite effectively. Dr. Paul Gross found that cysteine and
methionine helped combat the extreme toxicity of thallium in
rats. These sulfur containing amino acids have high affinity
for heavy minerals and metals and combine with them making them
soluble for excretion by the kidneys.
Cysteine is a very effective scavenger of free
radicals, as well as a toxic waste product detoxifier of acetaldehyde
in the liver and elsewhere. It is present up to 22% in the alpha
keratin protein of fingernails and toenails, and up to 41% in
the more flexible keratins of skin and hair. In order to prevent
the rapid conversion of cysteine to cystine, before it has performed
its other valuable functions, the daily intake of Vitamin C should
be approximately two to three times greater than the intake of
cysteine. Vitamin C will not only inhibit the immediate oxidation
of cysteine to cystine, but will also
work synergistically with cysteine
to detoxify acetaldehyde and remove toxic heavy metals.
Methionine, another essential, sulfur-containing
amino acid, is important for blood proteins albumin and globulin
to be made by the liver. The urine cannot be collected normally
and swelling and edema occur without this amino acid.
Lysine is another essential amino acid which
is used for optimal growth and maintenance of nitrogen equilibrium.
Lysine is used in the treatment
of herpes simplex and as an anti-viral agent. Researchers found
that proteins were high in Lysine in 1970. Lysine is necessary
for the absorption of calcium into the body and is enchanced
by Vitamin A and C and it works with collagen products which
represents 30% of total body protein, and is found in connective
tissue, including skin, bones, ligaments and cartilage.
Sodium Alginate impedes the absorption of poisonous
metals in the intestinal tract. Dr. O. Van Der Borght reported
that a colleague accidently ingested 16 mcC of Radium sulfate.
She was given 15 gm of sodium alginate per day in alginated bread,
and within three months, the radioactivity in the feces went
from 1600 pC to l pC. The sodium alginate removed the radium
from the small intestine.
Apple pectin is used to absorb organic toxins in
the intestinal tract.
When sodium alginate and
pectin reach the stomach,
they are hydrolyzed by the stomach acid into Mannuronic Acid
and Glucoronic Acid, respectively. These sugar derivatives can
form complexes with heavy minerals such as radium, barium and
strontium and remove them from the body. They also absorb toxins
in the intestinal tract and prevent their absorption.
