THERE HAVE BEEN STUDIES WHICH FOUND RAW CABBAGE JUICE TO BE USEFUL
IN TREATING ULCERS
The high glutamine and S-methylmethionine
content of cabbage may be responsible. Garnett Cheney, M.D. had
100 peptic ulcer patients drink four glasses of raw cabbage juice
daily. The patients reported dramatically less pain, and X-ray
examination confirmed faster healing time. There was no other
change in their diet, and they did not have drug therapy. Of
the patients, 81% were symptom free within one week; over two-thirds
were better in just four days. The average healing time for patients
given standard hospital treatment was over a month.
Dr. Cheney, used cabbage juice
to also treat gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. He named the
healing constituent the "anti-ulcer factor." He named
this vitamin "U", for ulcer. He also found this factor
in plants. It is an amino acid, "methylmethioninesulfonium
bromide." Removing two "methyl" groups has a major
effect on cell metabolism. It has a special protective action
on the gastric mucosa, counteracting the digestive action of
gastric acids.
FIGHTING CANCER FROM THE
CABBAGE PATCH
Cabbage belongs to the Brassica
family. A host of recent studies has shown that brassicas - which
include broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and mustard
- possess cancer fighting compounds.
Midwestern scientists have
found evidence that something in pickled cabbage and related
foods blocks the action of estrogen, a hormone that can fuel
the growth of breast cancer and other reproductive tract malignancies.
The findings by nutritionist William G. Helferich's team suggest
these foods might offer even more "potentially important"
agents and point toward a new class of drugs to reduce cancer
risk, observes Barnett Zumoff, chief of endocrinology at Beth
Israel Medical Center in New York.
